Leap Motion Preparing to Ship Devices in Early May for $80

Leap Motion, which allows users to control their computer purely through motion-control, will ship on May 13 for $80. The technology seems like some strange Kinect-like science fiction gimmick but, according to Leap, the technology is accurate up to a hundredth of an inch, and 200 times more accurate than anything else on the market.

As you can see in the video, Leap basically requires users to act like an orchestra conductor. We’ve been slowly assimilating touch and gestures into our lives with the use of smartphones and tablets, and it looks like the next frontier is more motion-based. It looks amazing, but also a bit weird. And fun.

Over the past twelve months, over 12,000 developers have been working to create compatible software with Leap. When it does launch, the Leap device will support Windows Vista, 7 and 8, as well as OS X 10.7 and 10.8. Developer support is one huge piece of the puzzle; now all Leap needs is widespread consumer interest.

The device will initially be available in the U.S.—both on Leap’s website and at Best Buy retail locations. Leap said it hopes the device will become a “transformative experience” for consumers. From what we’ve seen, it looks like the company might accomplish that. I can’t wait to try it out.

3D? Feh. MIT has already moved on to 4D printing (video)

3D Feh MIT has already moved on to 4D printing video

The bad news: just as much of the world is starting to get excited about the prospects of 3D printing, science is moving on to the world of 4D. The good news: in the future, you might not have to assemble that Ikea chair yourself. "4D printing" is the term cientists are using to refer to a technology that MIT's Skylar Tibbits talked up during a recent TED appearance. The fourth "d" here is time, referring to an object that, once printed, is capable of changing shape (over time, naturally).

"Essentially the printing is nothing new," Tibbits told the BBC. "It is about what happens after." So far the concept has been demonstrated with thin strands of plastic, which, once added to water, form into a predetermined shape, using energy from the absorption. Suggested future applications involve furniture, pipes, bikes and buildings. First, however, scientists will have to demonstrate the technology on a larger structure, of course, and they'll explore the possibility of other energy sources, like heat, sound and vibration.

ChargeCard Fits In Your Wallet And Can Charge Any iPhone And Android Device, Now Up For Pre-Order

As anybody travelling out-and-about frequently will know, keeping your iPhone (or any mobile device, for that matter) sufficiently juiced-up can be a trying task. New features being added in the hardware and software stakes all the time often prove detrimental to the battery life, and although most of us carry a USB cable around with us for such emergencies, it's not a very practical peripheral. Enter ChargeCard, a self-descriptive accessory which slots straight into your wallet, just like a card, while including the correct connectors to turn any USB port into a Lightning / 30-pin/ microUSB...

Our Hero Has Lost His Touch

Although I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there are no paper clips, used pieces of gum, sticks, wires, or bobby pins anywhere in site. A carpenter can't work without his tools!

T-Mobile is Offering the Nexus 4 for Free Through Feb. 24

nexus-4

Here’s a nice little offer before the madness of Mobile World Congress kicks off: T-Mobile is offering the Nexus 4 (16GB version) for free with two-year contract and $50 mail-in-rebate. But the deal only lasts through Sunday, Feb. 24, so you need to act fast if you want to save some dough.

The Nexus 4 is fairly cheap off-contract from Google Play, so you may want to take that route instead of tying yourself down with a two-year agreement.

The timing, though, is interesting in that we’ll likely see plenty of big Android devices announced next week during Mobile World Congress, which means consumer interest in the Nexus 4 may decrease.
